So there is a bug with this fields form display widget. When adding a new node for a content type that only has a single file field with its widget set to "PDF file with analysis" the files is not ajax uploaded and has to be POST/saved in order to see a live scan or edit the file links descriptions text. Where if were set to the drupal core "File" widget and your adding a new node, it would ajax upload the document and allow you to edit the description before hitting save. And further testing found if we add a second file field, one being set to "PDF file with analysis" and one to the generic "File" then the ajax uploading is somehow fixed, and people can set descriptions prior to hitting save.
