+1 Can confirm that the MR in #1 and #2 fixes the issue.

Hey folks, the code for this patch appears to work properly and it is the correct approach to resolve this issue.

Is it possible to get this fix merged in and create a release soon?

I'm using form steps for a project that needs to see this introduced. I'd be happy to help out with cutting a release as a maintainer if you need some new hands on deck.
