#230029: Remove race condition in node_save left a now unneeded variable in D6' node.module that should be removed. The patch by salvis has already been RTBC in May, (before porting work started) and was then forgotten.
Upon request I'm splitting off this cleanup patch from that issue.
Please credit salvis not me.
