I have reproduced the issue and applied MR!1.

Steps I followed to reproduce this issue:

1.Installed the Webform module and cloned the Mailboxlayer module.
2.Created an API key on mailboxlayer.com and configured it.
3.Created a contact form and added an email field with the checkbox enabled for Mailboxlayer.
4.Verified the working API key, and to reproduce the issue, I added an incorrect API key to generate the error. However, with the incorrect API key, no message was showing on the Recent Log Messages tab.
5.I applied the patch, set the incorrect API key again, and then checked whether it returned an error. I can confirm that the changes in MR1 are working well.
Test Result: Now it shows the error log message when we have an expired or incorrect API key.
I am attaching a video for reference. Changing the status to RTBC+."
