As far as I can tell, this is fixed in Drupal 9.1.x (and later) by #3106659: Media types with missing source fields break the status report page.

It didn't get backported to 8.9.x, presumably because 8.9.x is only accepting security fixes at this point. So, I'm going to close this issue out as "won't fix"; your patch is a perfectly good workaround until 8.9.x reaches its end-of-life. :)
