Problem/Motivation

When we use slick paragraphs vanilla as a display format for a paragraph referenced in a block and then we try to add that block via layout builder it shows orphaned error, This only happens first time when block is added and if we save the node and then edit the block again on layout builder page it works fine.

Steps to reproduce

  • On fresh Drupal 8 site, install and enable paragraphs, slick, entity_browser, slick_paragraphs module
  • Create a new paragraph as card with a media reference field of type image
  • Choose entity browser as form widget(Create an entity browser first)
  • Now create a block type hero and add a paragraphs as entity reference revision field and select paragraph of type card that you have created above.
  • Go to manage display and select slick paragraphs vanilla as display format and save
  • Now go to lay builder page of node and add hero block, In the preview it is rendered as orphaned

Additional info

  • It only happens with preview when block is first created, if we save the node the error disappears.

I can confirm this behavior as well. slick_entityreference has similar conditions, but slick_paragraphs seems to have better support for edits to existing paragraph entries. It doesn't not happen on other paragraphs not using slick and if the entity formatter is used, it displays expected rendered entity as well.

Note, I'm seeing this behavior on Drupal 9 with recent patches from #3047022 applied.

IMO, this issue is not because of the Slick Paragraphs Vanilla formatter but due to the Drupal\blazy\Dejavu\BlazyEntityBase, which is extended by this class' parent: Drupal\slick\Plugin\Field\FieldFormatter\SlickEntityFormatterBase
