Remove old 7.x code

A lot of old code was left in the module during the 8.x-2.x development cycle to serve as reminders for features that had not yet been ported. In fact, most of this remaining code relates to features that will not be ported. This old code needs to be removed before version 8.x-2.0 can be released.
