Metropolis font has no cyrillic support. There is an issue "Cyrillic support · Issue #7 · chrismsimpson/Metropolis · GitHub"
So, cyrillic text downgrades to some sort of "serif" font and looks awful.
This issue reproduced on Windows 7 Prof. x64
1. Latest Google Chrome 81.0.4044.92, (64 bit)
2. Latest Mozilla Firefox 75.0 (64-bit)
On Windows 10 Home x64:
1. Latest Google Chrome 81.0.4044.92, (64 bit)
But there are no issues on latest Android Google Chrome 80.0.3987.162
Here is an example cyrillic (russian) text for tests:
Съешь же ещё этих мягких французских булок да выпей чаю

mherchelI knew that the webfonts would fall back to system fonts if the character set wasn't supported, but I didn't know they would look bad.
Do you know any system fonts that look good with cyrillic character sets?

vladsh commentedLook, I've changed
font-family:'metropolis','sans-serif'to
font-family:metropolis,sans-serifand now all looks as expected, i.e. without serifs.
Update:
sans-serif is a generic family name and should be used without any quotes.
