Could we make the file folder configurable (public://synonyms)?

I am running into problems because I need to export the synonyms to a folder outside of the default public file folders. Normally I would just get around this by creating symbolic links. However, in my server setup it causes problems when I try to make Drupal write to a symlinked folder and it also creates problems when I try to make my search engine read synonyms symlinked to my Drupal installation.

Could you clarify where you'd be exporting the file to if not into the public:// folder? I believe the only options would be inside of public:// or private://.

@mrweiner Yes - in my case I run a website on a server that is split into 3 parts:

1) The Drupal website,
2) A Solr server
3) A shared area (for exchanging synonyms and more)

For security I am not able to make 1 and 3 communicate directly, also I am not able to symlink outside their own file structure. So I need to write to the shared area, outside my Drupal installation.

Testing steps

1. Enable the module
2. Configure the file directory for this module
3. Export synonyms

Expected: The configured folder should contain the exported synonyms

1. Reconfigure by removing the custom folder location

Expected: Synonyms should be exported to public://synonyms
