We really want to take advantage of some of the new features in Drupal 8.3.x, but none of them are marked as stable - and none will be stable until at least 8.4.x. To try to take advantage of the new functionality as early as possible, we should create an experimental branch of Lightning that runs the dev branch of 8.4.x. The idea being that it will put us in a better position to:

  • Help find and report bugs in core experimental modules which, in turn, should make them more likely to be stable in 8.4.0
  • Allow users to get a preview of what Lightning will look like in the future and provide early testing and feedback

We also have some experimental code currently in the Lightning mainline branch. That should be moved to the new experimental branch.
