Now that Webmention has become a W3C standard, how to proceed? Perhaps merge with Vinculum module?

I think for D8 we are trying to move it to the more intuitive name "linkback" see discussion here: #2687129: Plan for Drupal 8

( https://www.drupal.org/project/linkback ) initially set up by @sanduhrs last summer.

In my opinion this namespace is valuable and shouldn't be merged into other modules. There is a W3 specification called Webmention and the other names would be confusing to someone looking for an implementation of that spec.

@rupl the new module going for the all in one indieweb approach is https://drupal.org/project/indieweb and it has its own webmention implementation. Linkback https://drupal.org/project/linkback has a pretty good plugin architecture and batching now which implements webmentions.
