When I open the settings page I see a list of 'fields that will be searched' that already have a few checked boxes - mostly titles.
When I try to add fields e.g. 'authors' I can click to select but when I save the configuration despite getting a message saying 'changes saved' my additional selections are not saved.
This makes it difficult to search!

Any suggestions?

This functionality is working for me with the basic Seven admin theme, maybe check your theme to see if the checkboxes are being covered up by something.
