Great module! Works for Drupal6 as well. However, I would like to have user-based (as opposed to role-based) access-control to audio downloads. Is there a way I can currently achieve this in Drupal6?

you might look at the various access control modules. one might offer the functionality you're seeking. the audio module should honor their settings.
