In Drupal 7 you can create a text field and have it be displayed as formatted text in one display mode and plain text in another display mode. This flexibility made sense and would be useful in Drupal 8 as well. It would also solve some problems about how to migrate such fields from Drupal 7 that would have no equivalent setup currently in Drupal 8.
It would also be worth seeing if other field types suffer from the same problem in Drupal 8.
See #2726803-6: Field formatters with names different than their field type can not be migrated for additional context.

smustgrave commentedThank you for sharing your idea for improving Drupal.
We are working to decide if this proposal meets the Criteria for evaluating proposed changes. There hasn't been any discussion here for over 8 years which suggests that this has either been implemented or there is no community support. Your thoughts on this will allow a decision to be made.
Since we need more information to move forward with this issue, the status is now Postponed (maintainer needs more info). If we don't receive additional information to help with the issue, it may be closed after three months.
Thanks!

smustgrave commentedGoing to close out since there's been no follow up and a feature request. Also I believe this is already possible, what's not interchangable is the storage.
