The implementation of this module is confusing. Instead on adding settings to the field settings form, it should implement another widget for date field, similar to Date Popup module.

Is there any reason for this non-standard behavior?

Yes. First time I tried to implement a new widget type as you are suggesting, but 2-3 week latter a give up, because the date module only supports the "official" widgets.

In the form element creation process and in the validation process there are several hardcoded things which make very-very difficult to create a new widget.
I should have reimplement (copy-paste or whatever) the half of the date module.

I understand.
So I need to use some workaround (similar to the one provided for the Authored field).

It would be helpful to inform about this design decision and its rationale in the README and/or project page. That should stop people (like me) who are unaware of this from opening new issues to request a widget.
