Problem/Motivation

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install a standard profile.
  2. Goto admin/structure/types/manage/article/fields/node.article.field_tags
  3. Add some tag for default value which doesn't already exist.
  4. Save settings
  5. Fatal error: Call to a member function uuid() on a non-object in /vagrant/app/core/lib/Drupal/Core/Field/EntityReferenceFieldItemList.php on line 115

In d7 if you follow same steps it doesn't generate fatal and doesn't set anything as a default value. Attached test is for node but it is same for taxonomy.

Are you sure this is a critical issue? This just never allows you to save something in there, so its also no data loss, nor does it result into an unusable system, just go back in the browser history and be happy, see https://www.drupal.org/core/issue-priority

There is a fatal after saving the settings so I don't know but it does qualify as https://www.drupal.org/core/issue-priority#major-bug.
