I have reviewed the issues list and I'm still not sure which of the clientside validations versions I should use with webform 7-4x (7x-4.2 is the version I am currently running.)

Both versions should work. The long-term plan is to split up clientside validations in to submodules of their respective modules so they can be supported in their issue queues, because we can't keep track of all the changes in all of contrib. If you encounter any specific problems feel free to report them in our issue queue for now.
