Yup, good catch. Code is good, patch applies cleanly, and my D6 test site still works (no surprises there). I just committed a similar fix to the 5.x-2.* version of update_status in contrib (http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=107522). Now this just has to go into HEAD and DRUPAL-6. Thanks, scor.
