I hope you would consider making this work with the Password Tab module. It makes such a huge difference in terms of UI to have the password field removed from the Account tab and on it's own.

I'm having trouble because users resetting their password -- logging in via the one-time login link are not able to create a new password -- and obviously they can't put in their old one because they don't know it.

Please see the patch i've added here and see if you can work out how to adjust it for the Password Tab module.

D7 reached its EOL back in January 2025, and there is no active release for D7 for this module anymore.
Development or support is not planned for D7. All D7-related issues are marked as outdated in a bunch.
