Mickey - is the response.gzip configuration exposed in the D8 UI anywhere? I didn't see it on the admin/config/development/performance page.

Sort of. It's on http://d8.dev/admin/config/development/performance but hidden with display:none. No idea why. It sits just above Aggregate CSS files.

Ah - I see. When the "Use internal page cache" box is checked, then the "Compress cached pages" box is visible. See http://note.io/1ogIHKF.
