We've got two modules doing pretty identical things: Smart Trim and Trimmed Plaintext

In spite of Trimmed Plaintext being around longer, it appears Smart Trim has the momentum at this point (16x the users, a D8 branch actively being worked on, and more features) so most likely Trimmed Plaintext would follow some of the suggestions in the Open Letter thing.

Any thoughts otherwise? Missing functionality that would be lost? If not, let's make this happen.

I'm not maintaining the trimmed_plaintext module. I made it for myself for a project a while ago. Put it on DO since I thought other people might also want it.

If smart trim is better and gets the job done, I can shut this module down and "update" this module so people are notified to switch over if they please.

If you want the trimmed_plaintext namespace I could probably also move that over as well.

Looks like other people sure did want to use it like 527+ people! But yeah, I think it would be best for focusing efforts to shut it down.

I'd probably recommend:

  1. Put a prominent notice on the module page that Smart Trim is recommended and Trimmed Plaintext will not be providing updates or a D8 branch
  2. Still list the 7.x-1.0-beta4 release, but turn off the Supported checkbox and set the Recommended major release to None

I would keep the namespace and module page up though because you've got all those folks currently using it that might want to provide patches or whatnot still.

Thanks for sharing a great module concept, j0rd! I wish the smart_trim folks had just built on this one instead of recreating the wheel, but such is life.

You 100% sure Smart Trim does what Trimmed Plaintext does? I don't intend to test Smart Trim....so I assume you know that it does with trimmed plaintext does.

Once confirmed I'll put the warning up on the project page.

I am planning on doing a sandbox install to double-check side-by-side the same features on the front-end, just haven't had a minute to do so yet. Will update when I do (hopefully this week)!

Reviewed both the code and exposed functionality in a sandbox and can confirm for sure that Smart Trim supports all the features of Trimmed Plaintext and more.
