For example, polls and answers do not require the body field to be filled out (only titles). When I get an email notification about a new node of this content type, the message body is like so:

User7 created the Poll “test poll” on example.com in the
TEST group on Thu, 01/23/2014 - 11:10pm:

[message:field-target-nodes:0:body]

This is an easy fix to configure the message types "Clear empty tokens" checkbox.

In fact, I can't think of any reason to not set this for all message types by default...

Side note: I did not include updb scripts for these, so it will only take affect on a new install or if you're manually reverting. The main motivation behind this is that messages are easily and usually modified, and we don't want to overwrite other settings. I advise admins to compare their overridden changes and revert/merge changes as needed.
