Is it possible to reference fields from the "product display type"? (i have a code which is the same for all product variations, and want to use that plus a field from the product itself.

This probably isn't a great idea, since the product is intended to be totally independent of the display. If the field in question on the product display is really important to the working of the product, it should probably live on the product itself and just be displayed on the product display. Hope that makes sense!
