Unless I am missing something, I cannot edit the title (tried it on books.) They are many cases when one would want to make the title more seo friendly.

Please consider adding it.

If you mean the url, 'path alias`s' and the module 'pathauto' is your friend.
If you mean the <title> tag - http://drupal.org/project/page_title is your friend :-)
