Help Region?

Is there any hinderance to enabling block module and having it just sit there? For those who use mini panels, they'd probably enable blocks anyways for placement.

If anything just leave permission to administer blocks to just administrator, not site editor.

Personally I always enable the block module. Doesn't that allow blocks to be placed in panels?

Not having the help region is one of the hold-ups for #2293947: Make "Landing Page" into node + Panelizer (rather than a Page Manager page).

Here's a patch to turn it on in the distro, not affecting child distros. Patch will break if #2128959: Replace default "update" module behavior with something that makes sense for distributions completed first (or break that one.)

I also always use the Block module!

I do know, however, from presenting about Panopoly, that there are some people who like the idea of not using the Block module. I actually don't know how many people in practice are running without Block on a fully built out site, and how many people are just into the idea of not using it. :-)

This would be something worth bringing up on https://groups.drupal.org/panopoly and asking how many people are using the Block module in practice, and how many would be strongly opposed to it. Anyone wanna start the thread? Then we can all Tweet it out. ;-)

I'll create a poll on the panopoly group and tweet it out.

Also note, our largest child distro (OpenAtrium) has the block module enabled.

Here's an updated patch that enables the core block module for the distribution install and update.

Forgot to add a small patch to panopoly_admin to adjust the help region css on node add/edit pages. This goes along with #8.

Works as expected. Did drush updb and drush si. Now we can have awesome submission guidelines, which is totally worth the block module.

Thanks @cashbre and @mglaman for continuing to push this one forward and testing each other's work! I did a quick upgrade and install test and everything worked. So, committed with a couple minor changes.
