Now that #1969088: Changes to group browsing widget & user status updates is in, can we also add a way to tag users? Like Foursquare, Facebook and Twitter do (using the @ sign).

+1 for this feature. Would really be a great feature in my opinion. It'd be even more impressive if you could use the @ sign in any type of content.

Mentions seems like a great module, however it doesn't do the auto populate people are used to in Facebook

I agree that this would be a great feature. In general, we should consider integrating this into Message Notify/Subscribe so that we can standardize our stack for notifications (sending and end-user UI) as much as possible.
