How would the preg_replace need to be changed for this to work without requiring quotation marks (which would make it interoperate with Markdown?)

I have no intention of making this work without the quotation marks and since this issue is well over a year old, I'm going to assume you worked out how to change preg_replace to accomplish this by now! Closing the ticket.
