Condition "field has value" when field is part of unlimited group

I have a field called "Status" that is a select list with options "A" "B" "C" & "D". The field is part of a multigroup called "Status Group". The field can only be added once, but the multigroup itself can be added multiple times.

I need to set a rule that basically says, whenever content is updated, if the newest Status Group's "Status" field value is "D," send an email.

Does that make sense? I'm really trying to do this in rules for learning purposes, but I'm starting to be suspicious I'll need to do it programmatically.
