I think it would be really nice for a new user to be able to subscribe to mailing list during registration. I realize this is a pretty complicated issue that is partly tied to other feature requests... but it would be cool.

I think this is a bit too complicated for too little a benefit. There is someone working on a default subscription, i.e. when someone registers for an account, they automatically get subscribed. That would eliminate the need to actively sign up for a list when registering.
