OG User Roles and Assigning Group Roles by Default

Last updated on

OG User Roles has several settings to allow you to define and assign a default role to users who either sign up to your site or subscribe to your group:

  • Default Non-Group Role for new users
Use this setting to define a role to be assigned to ALL new users who sign up to your site. This is NOT a group role, but a site-wide role that the user will have anywhere on your site. Use this for automatically placing all new users who create a new account on your site into a single role.
  • Default Basic Group Role for new group subscribers
Use this setting to define a group role to be assigned to all new users who sign up to ANY group on your site. This is NOT a site-wide role that the user will have everywhere on your site. This is a group role whose permissions the user will only have within the group or groups he has subscribed to. Use this to automatically place all new group subscribers into a single role.
  • Default Group Role for new group administrator
Use this setting to select a group role to automatically assign to users who are elevated to group administrator. The role is specific to the group in which the user is a group administrator. That is, the user will only have the privileges of the role in the group he is the administrator for. http://drupal.org/node/197489
  • Allow Group Admins to define Default Basic Group Role for new group subscribers
Use this setting to give your Group Admins (those with the "configure member roles" permission in 5.x and the "auto assign group roles" permission in 6.x) the ability to define a default group role for all new subscribers to their groups. So, the Group Admin for Group A could define the "ReadOnly" role as the default role for his group while the Group Admin for Group B could define the "ReadAndWrite" role as the default role for his group. This is good if you need to have different default group roles defined for different groups.

Note that with this last setting, a new option will appear in the Group Node Edit form of all groups: Default Basic Group Role for new subscribers to this group. This option will ONLY appear in the Edit screen, after the group has already been created. It will NOT appear on the group Create screen. Within this option, if the Group Admin wants to define a default group role for new subscribers to be assigned, he must check the Set default basic group (group limited) role for users who join this group? checkbox, and select a default role from the Role to use as a basic group role pulldown. If he does not do both of these things, then the group will not be set up to assign a default role, although one may still be defined in the 2nd OG User Roles setting above.
