Support any node type to be sent as postcard. This way CCK created nodes (with imagefields) can also be used for postcard

I am beginning work for supporting imagecache in HEAD. The full feature remains to be seen what I will do and will only be in Drupal 6.

I was suggesting support for node will be more generic and extensible for even different media like Flash and video.

So here is a suggestion. The postacard module should take care of creating a node and forwarding the code to receiver and then deleting after a certain period of time. The actual rendering ("display") of the code will be done by core drupal (CCK itself). So if there is audio node it can play audio. SO it would rather simplify what postcard module does. Actuall rendering can be changed easily in theme (tpl) file for the node. Since postcard won't worry about rendering(displaying, playing, showing) any type of code becomes a postcard. And gallary can be created using views.

Hm , well I think in many respects this is what the send module does so maybe that is better suited to wider needs. I'll have to think about the best overall direction and future for postcard. It seems that in many instances just creating the nodetypes you want, doing views and using send would satisfy your needs so I'm not sure what postcard is needed for in that scenario.

You are right, I was not aware of send module. The send module seems to be doing most of it. I have not looked closely but perhaps it misses the personalized aspect of a postcard (caption, names, unique URL/keycode so only recipient can see it) and deletion of old cards.
As I can see there is lot more common in Send module and postcard and perhaps you can leverage some of it. That would add a dependency but may give more features, a judgement only you can make.

Yep, you are right about the points of difference re: personalization. Anyway, I will continue to work on this issue of removing dependency on Image module after the straight port to 6 is done.

when you work on rewriting the module for drupal 6 , hope you realise whole the code should be rewritten. i made reply to your email.
ajayg hope it will help you

Hi Sarath, well 6.x-1.x is to be a straight port and not a rewrite but yes, the plan for 6.x-2.x is to completely rewrite it, as that is the only way to remove the dependency on Image. Yes, I am aware of that and it would have been great if you would have helped me rewrite it rather than writing a new module because then a) we could have kept one module so as to not confuse people and b) provided an upgrade path for existing users. This is why I really wanted help with this - the upgrade path will be a challenge.

But maybe I need to see how many people really use postcard and maybe I will not duplicate all that work. I can easily deprecate this module and just tell people to use yours instead. That will certainly save me a lot of duplicative work, though I will feel badly for folks who need to find a way to manually upgrade. :-(

At the least I will complete the straight port to 6 for folks that want to stay here and then I think that will be it.

actually i tried many times to use your module for my site with little bit of hack. but i didn't find a suitable solutions , as my cards are flash cards and i need a custom content. i tried to hack image module to make it use for flash content too, thats something little complicated. thats why i wrote a new module. it was not my intention to make duplicate. i want to launch a greeting card site before christmas and new year i wrote one for my need and after that i thought i will contribute it to the community. to be frankly for image galleries your module is great. one touch solutions.
if you rewrite completely i feel its better to ask existing users as a rewrite make life complicated for the existing users. please complete the straight port for existing users.

i made credits to you and the author of annotate module.

sorry i didn't do it at the begining.

add1sun’s picture

thanks for that and I'm sorry if I've come off grumpy, but I have been wanting to do this rewrite for a while and just haven't had the time so I was very frustrated. I think continuing reliance on Image Gallery is a really bad idea, due to a number of reasons, so I will direct folks to ecard. I will support Postcard through Drupal 6's cycle but people will need to move on after that. I would really prefer there be one solid module people can use and content types is the model for the future.

no problem, you told me openly what you feel , and i realised my mistake and corrected it.
btw i just went through your profile and site , and saw you went top on drupal. great and congrats for your sucess i just saw your photo with hair cut. i believe a girl should have hair, you look like a boy there :D ( ma be biased indian concept ) as you loving it keep enjoy it. after all we can only cut our hair and nails right? :)

@mssarath: This is OT, but then again so was your post. You probably didn't mean it this way, but that came off as insulting and a bit creepy, at least to me. Please be cognizant of your words and how they affect others, and keep opinions like this about what women "should" be doing to yourself. Thanks.

@msarath : please keep responses relevant to the *drupal* issue at hand. We're a big, global community here ... and biased concepts (yours, Indian or otherwise) aren't appropriate here.

lol! @walkah
"You probably didn't mean it this way, but that came off as insulting and a bit creepy, at least to me"
i hope i was not answering to your questions. also i was not commenting on you. i don't know y you jump in to the middle. if you feel insulted its coz nothing wrong from my part its just coz of yourself , when i first saw your post i thought you are a woman and by looking at the profile i saw i was right. and i hope you also have an hair cut thats why you feel very much insulted.

Please be congnizant of your words too, if you feel you are alright , i also feel i am allright too.
about the 'women should' part - i hope you missed the exact words "i believe a girl should have hair" , i was saying about my beliefs not saying you should do that right? what if you met a guy who wear a ladies cloths say a skirt and stockings after talking a while let say topic was drupal you may do the same politely comments 'i believe a guy should wear guy's cloths' that guy may be laughing and took at the right sense but suddenly another guy from the left corner came in and shout at you 'what you said is insulting to many of us and its creepy and you should stay on drupal topic' how do you feel? did you ask to that guy any questions? or comments on his dressing?

anyway a biased indian 'hi' to you dear friend you can have a biased canadian 'hi' back y not?

about the *drupal issue* the issue already solved , in this thread. the discussion we had here was a continuation of few letters send between us. as we started out commenting here we just continuing here instead of emailing and replying.

It doesn't matter to whom your comment was specifically addressed (add1sun is a friend of mine, but that's really beside the point). I jump in the middle because I care about making the Drupal community a friendly, open, and welcoming place to all people, and that includes other women contributors who are going to come across this comment and feel alienated and uncomfortable because of your words.

Espousing of personal beliefs like this (same with how you feel men ought/ought not to dress) have absolutely no place in a technical community. Keep the conversation to the code.

@mssarath, the d.o issue queue is not an appropriate place to discuss things about me personally. I don't care what your beliefs are about me being a woman or my hair or what clothes I should or shouldn't wear. That has no bearing whatsoever on my work within Drupal so you are just plain out of line. Others will and have every right to interject because this is a not a private conversation as you may want to believe it is, it is a public, working issue queue and the community has a vested interest in keeping it that way. That said, if you would have said the above to me in private I would be just as offended and annoyed and probably would respond in a much more personal, angry way. Let's leave it at that and move on.

Back to actual project work, I'm changing status to "won't fix" on this issue since Postcard will not implement this feature.
