"Access Denied" is misleading when link followed in error

If a user clicks a link to publish or unpublish a node that has already been published or unpublished, respectively -- for example, because another user got to it first, or because a View is displaying both published and unpublished content together -- the error message is "Access Denied," which is distressing to the user and confusing to the administrator trying to track down the problem. I realize this error message is coming from the menu system and not from the module, but I wonder if it would be possible to display a more informative message such as "This content is already unpublished" at the top of the page rather than using the menu system to deny access.
