It's a nice improvement, but actually this module doesn't check Access Rules. So, if administrators block an user name, the Username originality control passes, but after form submit the user get another error message.

Thank you guys for all work you did. We have ported this module to Drupal 6 and added features you proposed to both Drupal 5 and 6. Releases will be ready soon. Please download it and test.
