Here's how it goes:

1. Guest-1 types 'hi'
2. Guest-2 sees nothing
3. Guest-1 types 'hi, again'
4. Guest-2 still sees nothing ,even after several minutes
5. Guest-2 then types 'anyone here?'
6. Guest-2 can now finally see Guest-1's previous two mesages, then his 'anyone here?' message
7. Similarly, Guest-1 does not see what Guest-2 types until Guest-1 types something.

This is done on with a fresh download of drupal-5.x-dev (dated June 20), running default settings (except it's running under clean urls), and latest version of chatroom. Tested on both IE 6 and FF 2.0. No other 3rd party modules are installed. Caching is turned off.

I cannot reproduce this.

Traced the problem back to the fact that two sites on the same server were sharing the /tmp directory and hence the drupal_chat_cache directory within it. This caused a conflict with permissions. This patch gives each site its own directory within /tmp. This issue is not a problem for sites which use a private tmp directory.
