Hi there, I have lots of userreferences sprinkled throughout my site, but I only really want this module to act on one content-type's userreference fields. Is that possible? When I enabled the module, it seemed to assume that any userreference field was fair game and without checking off anything in the field settings, it started denying people as soon as a value was entered for the field on a node.

It is not designed to do that, and I do not see how that would happen.
Choose one such case where you did not configure anything, and revise the settings of the field instance to make sure nothing is enabled by default.

But this was addressed specifically in #1182672: Change default settings so that author settings are unchecked (and possibly uncheck referenced user "view" setting by default)
