Problem when cookies disabled

I guess this is to be expected, but this does not degrade at all well if cookies are not enabled. Is there any way of fixing this to not be reliant upon browser settings? Could it be adapted to simply pass a form variable into a hidden field on the registration page or something (speaking as someone who has not even looked at how the registration aspect of this works)...
