/recipe/feed returns a blank HTML page

using DRUPAL-5 CVS of the contributions/modules/recipe

It could be because I have not defined any taxonomy; the first thing the feed code seems to do is to check the taxonomy -- is it possible that the lack of taxonomy causes the feed to fail, which causes the function to return a null result, which causes Firefox to substitute the about:blank page?

also, I wrote to Moshe about his thoughts on how to debug this and got a very short reply: he is not the maintainer -- his name and email should be removed from the CVS module documents.
