This is not a bug, it is a task. The information in here needs expanding to say the least.

normally cck creates 2 tables for one content.

so if you have name, address, etc fields, up to 50 contents, then drupal will create x2 of that number.
(one for the content, and one for the audit trail.)
50 contents means 100 tables.. wow..not so good.

there should be an option to merge all those tables to one relational table with audit trail.

there should be an option too for indexes, primary key and such..

optional: remove the cck prefix, field_field_foo to foo.

There is in contribute http://drupal.org/project/pbs it was decided not put this into core when fields was introduced. So this is a feature request. Given that field storage is plugable alternative storage engines such as mongodb can also be used at the moment.

This is definitely by design.
