I upgraded Drupal 7 core to drupal-7.x-dev (April 6, 2011). With update.php the screen was empty except for an error message:
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.
In the log I found: /includes/theme.inc on line 395.
SOLUTION: I replaced the new version of theme.inc with the previous one (from March 29) that was installed before the update, and the site came up again.
Right now the site seems OK.

bfroehle commentedincludes/theme.inc wasn't changed between March 29 and April 6. (In fact, it hasn't been changed since February 19.
Therefore it seems to me that you are using the 7.x-dev (April 6, 2011) version of Drupal without issue.

lyd commentedYes, I agree. After posting I made a comparison between the 2 files and found them to be identical as you say. Hence there might have been a corruption during upload or something similar. Happy that all is working.
I love Drupal 7.
