Is there a page, forum or site that lists Drupal developers for hire? I'm interested in developing a site but I do not have the skills to do it myself. I'd like to find a list of developers and their portfolios.

That's a tough list to go through. I have to click on each one and then take a look around. Many, if not most, are just blogs without portfolios shown.

Is there somewhere in this site, or some other independent site, those which I can 1) either browse through thumbnails of sites and follow through to the developer if I like the design, or 2) select by criteria form a list of developers?

Even a list of full-time Drupal developer would be great, a list that does not include just those that do it on the side. Seems like there must be a list of the pros somewhere.

What you need to look for when hiring Drupal developers:

  1. Developers must follow Drupal best practices and standards. This way they can work alongside other developers and other people can more easily pick up their work. Look for people who are active in Drupal community. Even attending Drupal meetups shows a certain level of dedication on Drupal.
  2. Good communication skills. Many errors happen before a single line of code is written when developers don't understand tasks. If you are not using English for documentation and tasks I highly recommend you to. You can easily hire experts from around the globe if you operate in English.
  3. Go remote. Looking for people to be working in your office will sooner or later limit you to hire junior people who you need to train. Even though this is a good investment it's a slow process. I recommend a combination of contractors/vendors and in-house staff. This will give you the best flexibility.

With over 10 years of experiences building Drupal team at AGILEDROP this were the main points I learned. After you find an experienced developer there is also one other thing to look after is consistent reliability. Especially experienced developers need challenges and they get bored if nothing new happens. With this comes decreased infectivity and slacking. Make sure you stay engaged and list to your people and make sure they grow as professionals.
