I fixed this here #817702: Make compatible with apachesolr 2.x but then realized it's its own bug.

The current search block needs to get passed the $response variable so it can print out the number of results. I haven't tested this patch on 1.x because I don't run this version, but it should work. Tested in the issue above with apachesolr.module 2.x
