Problem/Motivation

The pipeline built two hosts: a drupal/varbase_project lane and a drupal/cms lane. Varbase Starter is a Drupal CMS site template, so Drupal CMS is the base it has to work on. Keeping a second Varbase host doubled the build time and split the coverage.

Proposed resolution

  • Remove the 📦 Install Varbase Starter site template (varbase) job and the VARBASE_PROJECT variable.
  • Promote 🧩 Install Varbase Starter site template (Drupal CMS) to the single pre-test job: it now also applies the base recipes the copied suites need (i18n, api, auth, ai), prepares the site for deterministic testing, seeds the testing users, and dumps the DB for the test matrix.
  • Point SITE_DIR / WEB_ROOT and the build cache at cmssite/ instead of testsite/.
  • Rename the test jobs 🧪 varbase-e2e → 🧪 functional and 🧪 varbase-e2e (smoke) → 🧪 functional (smoke). The test stage name is unchanged.

Net: .gitlab-ci.yml only, 203 lines removed.

Note: the Drupal CMS lane is currently expected to fail on install while drupal/canvas resolves to 1.11.0, which fatals with You have requested a synthetic service ("kernel"). That is an upstream defect — stock drupal_cms_starter fails the same way — tracked at drupal_cms work item 3591450. Canvas 1.10.1 installs clean. Canvas is deliberately left unconstrained here.

Remaining tasks

  • ✅ Change .gitlab-ci.yml
  • ❌ Review the change
  • ❌ Code review by maintainers
