It would be super handy to be able to link this out to an image style rather than the original image so that slideshows and lightboxes could be just that much more flexible.
Proposed resolution
The best approach will be to add an item to the "Link image to" drop-down element to Link to: Image Style. When that has been selected, the target image styles are rendered below the "Link image to" drop-down and the administrator/site builder can select the appropriate image style.

Work in progress. Currently exploring the API and hook_field_formatter_third_party_settings_form(),
User interface changes
Will add Link to: Image Style to "Link image to" drop-down select element and then render select element for Image Styles.
