Changes made by @djac are looking good. I ran phpcs --standard=Drupalpractice --extensions=php,module,inc,install,test,profile,theme,css,info,txt,md,yml and found no warnings or errors.
Also found no changes in how the module works after applying the changes and all tests are passing.

Moving this to RTBC.
