I messed up by first creating confusion in some discussion about D10 compatibility, then OK'ing a new release without really reviewing #3289460: Automated Drupal 10 compatibility fixes myself. (Have no been active for 3 months here.)

I now quickly reviewed the code changes, amended the above patch to change some things back a bit (while still respecting the changes in #3289460: Automated Drupal 10 compatibility fixes hopefully). Will do a new release, as this is a major-impact bug. I admit to not testing things manually; it all looks logical.
