Other issues:
We're experiencing a major problem with Drupal Packagist in that it doesn't seem to be respecting specific version constraints. See https://github.com/drupal-composer/drupal-packagist/issues/63- We're also seeing some issues with cweagans/composer-patches package in that it sometimes doesn't re-patch dependencies of dependencies that have been updated when the version of the dependency remains unchanged.

howards commentedI am marking this as "fixed" as a reference to all the subissues made. Secondarily, 8.x-1.05 has already been released. (e.g. 8.x-1.04 issues are done.) Repositories have already been tagged.
