When I first came to drop.org, I registered using my almost fail-safe name of j0e. I use this as I explore the web, because most of the time it is available. I've used it for a while now and even login to drupal.org using rpc as j0e@www.drop.org. Today, I changed my name on drop.org. Here are my observations:

  1. It worked pretty damn well! I was sure I'd regret it immediately.
  2. coming over to drupal.org and, predictably, logging in as j0e@www.drop.org no longer worked. But Joe Lombardo@drop.org worked fine.
  3. Now at drupal.org, I have two personalities. j0e@www.drop.org now exists alongside Joe Lombardo@drop.org. My old contributions on drupal are now stuck in this account, while new posts will appear under Joe Lombardo@drop.org.

I marked this item as 'By Design' because there isn't really a bug here. What should have happenned when you successfully logged into drupal.org with the new username? Should you have been logged into the existing account? This would be difficult (but not impossible) to achieve. We'd have to use UID as a key instead of username.
