This should all be fixed. I thought that I had committed the fix, but I guess I was having some trouble figuring out CVS.

just a bug report back
with the latest version 5.x-1.6 its all works fine without that syntax error

and the module update shows the correct version info now

I also spotted a typo mistake on my previous bug submit

also module_update.module does not retrieve the latest version info (the latest of this module shows as 5.x-1.2 whereas on here is 5.x-1.2

should be

......whereas on here is 5.x-1.5

but it's irrelevant now :)
