Unused Configuration
Last updated on
4 October 2026
Configuration that nothing uses still has to be exported, deployed, imported and reviewed. On accredited systems every configuration change goes through change control, so every leftover content type, field or view is something a reviewer has to read. The Unused configuration report lists configuration that nothing uses, with the evidence for each verdict.
It is a report only. It never deletes anything.
Where to find it
Reports » Drupal Cleanup » Unused configuration (/admin/reports/drupal-cleanup/config), with the Administer Drupal Cleanup permission. By default it shows only what to review; Show everything includes what is in use. From the command line:
drush cleanup:config drush cleanup:config --all drush cleanup:config --format=csvWhat it checks
| Type | Listed when |
|---|---|
| Content types, vocabularies, block types, media types, comment types, contact forms... | No content of that type exists. Every bundle of every content entity type is checked. |
| Fields | The field has never been filled in, on a type that does have content. |
| Views | The view is disabled, or none of its displays is in use: no page or feed path, no placed block, no field using it to pick values. Views with only embed displays may still be used from code. |
| Image styles | No display, field or responsive image style uses it. The size of its generated images on disk is shown. |
| Text formats | The format is disabled, or no stored text uses it. The fallback format is always in use. |
| Roles | No users have the role. |
| Blocks | The block is disabled, or it belongs to a theme that isn't installed at all. |
| Menus | A custom menu has no links. |
Reading the results
- Empty and Disabled are facts about the site's data.
- No usage detected means nothing in the database uses it. Theme templates and custom code can still use views, image styles and text formats without leaving a trace, so check before deleting.
- Blocks for themes that aren't installed are leftover configuration. Clearing them up is worthwhile: leftovers like these can make a configuration import fail validation.
- Roles with no users are worth removing on government systems: reviewing and removing unused roles is part of account management (NIST SP 800-53 AC-2).
