So now that the configs for 3.x are ready, what changes do we have to make for the 1.4 configs?
(Soon, we'll have to start work on 4.x configs, too, I guess.)

I'm not really keen in making this initiative work for solr 1.4 actually. Do the solrcore.properties work in solr 1.4?

I already worked on some of the solr 4.0 schemas, see #1550964: Support Solr 4.0 schema

Changes are limited but they do need to happen.

Oh, OK, I didn't know that. Why is this? I think we could still use each other's help in adapting the configs to this version. Or don't you want to support it at all in your module?
And yes, solrcore.properties seems to wok identically. I tested this patch, after all, and everything worked fine for me.
But if you don't want these in here, that's also fine with me.

I guess we won't be supporting Solr 1.x if we already do 3.x and 4.x. 2 versions seem more than good enough to me
